Is URLSum free?
The app itself is free to download and use. However, you'll need to provide your own API keys for Google Gemini (for summarization) and optionally OpenAI (for premium text-to-speech). Both services offer free tiers.
What API keys do I need?
You need a Google Gemini API key for summarization and Q&A features. This is available with a free tier that's quite generous. OpenAI API key is optional - it's only needed if you want to use premium text-to-speech voices instead of system voices.
Is my data private?
Yes! URLSum stores your API keys locally on your device. The app only sends webpage content to the AI services for processing. No tracking, no analytics, no data collection. Your browsing history and summaries stay on your device.
How does Reddit comment extraction work?
URLSum uses the Reddit API to fetch ALL comments, including those hidden behind "load more" buttons. This means you get the complete discussion thread, not just what's visible on the page. The app recursively fetches nested comments and preserves the threading structure.
Does ad blocking work on all websites?
Ad blocking is optimized for Reddit but also blocks common ad networks on other sites. On iOS, it uses network-level content blocking rules. On both platforms, it uses JavaScript and CSS injection to remove ads and tracking elements.
Can I use it offline?
You need an internet connection to load webpages and generate summaries. However, once a summary is generated, you can read it offline. The app doesn't require a constant connection.
How long are my summaries and Q&A conversations saved?
Your summaries and Q&A history are stored locally on your device and remain available throughout your session until you navigate to a different URL. This means you can switch between the webpage, summary, and Q&A tabs without losing any data. Everything is stored privately on your device - we never upload or store your data on any servers.
What's the difference between iOS and macOS versions?
Both versions share the same core features. The iOS version has additional content blocking rules for better ad blocking. The Mac version is a true native Mac app (not Catalyst) with keyboard shortcuts and Mac-specific UI elements.
How accurate are the summaries?
URLSum uses Google's latest Gemini AI model which provides high-quality summaries. For Reddit posts, it includes all comments in the context, giving you comprehensive summaries of entire discussions, not just the main post.
Can I customize the summary length?
Currently, URLSum generates concise summaries optimized for quick reading. The AI is prompted to create clear, focused summaries that capture the key points without being too brief or too verbose.
Is there a way to save or export summaries?
You can copy summaries to your clipboard. The app also maintains a history of your summaries and Q&A sessions during your current session. Future updates may include export features.
Where can I report bugs or request features?
Please open an issue on our GitHub repository. We welcome feedback and contributions!
Why do I need my own API keys?
Using your own API keys ensures privacy (no middleman), gives you control over costs, and allows the app to be distributed freely without subscription fees. It also means the app will continue working as long as the AI services exist.
